We are very excited about our Winter course which is completely organized by and run by Queen’s University Graduate students. You can access details about each week of the course here.

The Agnes Etherington Art Centre is currently running an exhibition titled Kingston Views: The Penal Presence, which ties in nicely with the upcoming class led by David St Onge on the Penal System of Kingston on November 26th.

From the exhibition description:

Kingston is strongly linked to the history of incarceration. Kingston Penitentiary, opened in 1835, is the oldest prison still in use in Canada, and one of several area prisons. With its elegant Neoclassical façade detailing, it is also one of the city’s architectural landmarks. This exhibition explores the response by several artists to this legacy and to the evolving ideologies behind penal practices, beginning with an 18th century print from the Carceri (Prison) series by the Italian etcher and designer Giovanni Battista Piranesi. Closer to home, a series of sketches of Kingston Penitentiary published in 1875, and 20th century drawings and watercolours by Carl Schaefer and Caven Atkins, reveal a fascination for both the building and life inside and outside its forbidding walls. Both Schaefer and Atkins came to Kingston to teach art in the Queen’s University summer school. As visitors to the city, their work provides a unique perspective on the Penitentiary, a subject that seems to have been of little interest to local artists.

The exhibition runs until Feburary 17, 2008 and more information can be found on the Anges Etherington Art Centre web site.

The Committee Against Race and Ethnic Discrimination (CARED) presents the First Anti-racism conference. This conference will explore how issues of race inform the Canadian university experience of both faculty and students.
The keynote address will be delivered by Dr. Carol Tator, professor at York University at 1 pm. There will also be a panel discussion, with noted speakers Dr. Cynthia Levine-Rasky, Dr. Barrington Walker, Georgina Riel and Jeff Welsh.
The cost of thjis conference is FREE and includes refreashments and lunch.
