Expectations

Expectations of Students

  • Your participation is encouraged at a level with which you are comfortable, and in a manner that suits your learning needs and style.
  • Don’t be shy – speak up when you have something to say about the course, the course material and your own relevant experiences.
  • Do try to consider the needs and interests of others in the class, sharing ‘air time’ and being respectful of others’ contributions and differing opinions.
  • Note that the course is not a speaker series; we expect people to attend all classes and we hope you’ll get to know and enjoy other students in the class.
  • If a student decides not to continue with the course after attending one or more sessions, they should call 533-2924 before the third class so that a person on the waiting list may take their place in the class.

Free Queen’s Registration Policy
Registration will open 2 – 3 weeks prior to the first class date. It will be accessible by email, phone, and in person. Registration will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to the new attendance policy. Registration will be as high as the classroom allows, all others will be placed on a waiting list.

Free Queen’s Attendance Policy

By registering, you are committing to attend at least 50% of the course dates. In the event that half the classes are missed, you will be placed at the bottom of the list for the upcoming course’s registration. In the event that you miss the first three classes, you may be asked to leave the course and the next person on the waiting list will be invited to your place.

Expectations of Instructors

  • Please try to ensure that students are introduced to new information and ways of thinking and have opportunities to engage with the new material in a personally meaningful way.
  • We encourage you to use interactive approaches (e.g., small and large group discussions) when appropriate.
  • Don’t feel restricted to conventional methods – use whatever approach suits your goals and your students; we have found that most Free Queen’s students are looking for active learning opportunities and are less appreciative of lecturing.
  • Keep in mind that students may well have a wide range of abilities and will likely come from a variety of academic backgrounds; given our promise of an accessible learning environment, we recommend that you use plain language as much as possible and that written texts make judicious use of white space.
  • Please contact the SGPS (533-2924 or at freequeens@sgps.ca) for any audio visual needs.
  • Before the first class, we will notify the instructors of any special needs identified by students in the class.
  • We’ll provide you with a list of all course instructors and contact information so that you can contact others if you wish.
